Blackjack – A two-card hand totaling 21. A blackjack is the only hand that pays 3-2. All other winning hands pay even money.

Bust – When your card total goes over 21, you “bust” or lose.

Hit – Taking more cards to bring your total closer to 21.

Stand – Refusing more cards because your total is already close to 21.

Double Down – Placing another bet and taking another card.

Split – Separating the first two cards you get dealt into two separate hands. You can split only when your first two cards have the same value.

Surrender – Withdrawing from the hand while only losing half of your bet. Surrender is a good option for a bad hand, unless the dealer has blackjack.

Insurance –Making a 2-1 side bet that the dealer has blackjack. Some casinos offer insurance when the dealer has an ace showing in his hand.

Soft Total – In blackjack, the ace can count as 1 or 10. The higher total is referred to as “soft.” So for example an ace and a 6 could be counted as 7 or soft 17.
